The illustration shows the triggering of various airbag and emergency tensioning retractor units in various types of accident

The emergency tensioning retractors, front and rear airbags, side airbags and window airbags are triggered if in a crash a particular acceleration/deceleration is exceeded within the specified angle of impact.

In the process precisely the airbag/emergency tensioning retractor units are deployed by the airbag control module which are required depending on the type and severity of the accident in order to (N2/7) ensure the best possible occupant protection.

In this connection data received from the seat occupied recognition sensor with automatic child seat recognition (B48) as well as the control status of the buckle switches are taken into account (only USA ONLY version).

At the same time as the deployment of the respective safety components the airbag control module (N2/7) sends an analog crash signal to the motor electronics control module (ME-SFI) (N3/10) (gasoline engined model) or the control module for Electronic Diesel System (EDS) (N39/2) (diesel). The control module then cuts off the engine.

In addition the airbag control module (N2/7) sends a digital crash signal to the emergency call system (TELE AID) control module (A35/8).

Malfunctions in the SRS system as well as the passenger seat occupied recognition sensor with automatic child seat recognition (B48) are displayed by the airbag SRS indicator/warning lamp (A1e15) in the instrument cluster (A1).

Under certain conditions the passenger seat occupied recognition sensor with automatic child seat recognition (B48) prevents the triggering of safety devices on the passenger side.

The function of the system and deactivation of the passenger airbag are displayed by the warning lamp for automatic child seat recognition (N72e1)/Airbag OFF indicator lamp, automatic child seat recognition (E16).

IMPORTANT The airbag units bear the label "SRS Airbag".

The inscription "SRS airbag" is attached to the B-pillar and C-pillar paneling under the roof on vehicles with window airbag.
