Steering Complaints 

SERVICE INFORMATION

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of any of the below power steering system conditions, please perform the associated remedy.

NOTE: Do not replace steering gear as a remedy for any of the below conditions.

Condition 1:  Steering leaking at steering gear

Cause:  Steering gear internal pipes may be oxidized or corroded.

Remedy:  Remove steering gear, refer to WIS document AR46.20-P-0600GH. Replace oxidized or corroded steering gear internal pipes, refer to WIS document AR46.20-P-3501GH.

Condition 2:  Steering noisy when turning.

Cause:  Steering shaft dust cap and/or clamp for steering gear bellows may be damaged.

Remedy:  Remove steering gear, refer to WIS document AR46.20-P-0600GH. Replace steering shaft dust cap if damaged, refer to WIS document AR46.20-P-0004GH. Replace clamp for steering gear bellows if damaged.

Condition 3:  Steering gear leaking at internal pipe fittings.

Cause:  Seal at internal pipe fittings may be insufficient.

Remedy:  Remove steering gear, refer to WIS document AR46.20-P-0600GH. Remove internal pipes, refer to WIS document AR46.20-P-3501GH. Replace o-rings at internal pipe fittings if necessary.

Condition 4 (Valid for 163.174 Only):  Steering heavy or stiff during low speed turns.

Cause:  Parametric valve may be malfunctioning.

Remedy:  Remove steering gear, refer to WIS document AR46.20-P-0600GH. Replace parametric valve (PML), refer to WIS document AR46.50-P-6000GH.

Condition 5:  Excessive play in steering wheel and/or noisy when steering.

Cause:  Inner tie rod may be damaged.

Remedy:  Replace inner tie rod, refer to WIS document AR46.40-P-0201GH.

Condition 6:  Excessive play in steering wheel when steering.

Cause:  Steering wheel play may not be correctly adjusted between thrust piece assembly and steering rack.

Remedy:  Remove steering gear, refer to WIS document AR46.20-P-0600GH. Set play between thrust piece assembly and steering rack, refer to WIS document AR46.20-P-0601GH.

Condition 7:  Steering leaking and noisy.

Cause:  Steering gear rubber bellows may be torn or damaged.

Remedy:  Remove steering gear, refer to WIS document AR46.20-P-0600GH. Replace steering gear rubber bellows, refer to WIS document AR46.40-P-0400GH.

Condition 8:  Leaking power steering hose connections at power steering pump and steering gear. Refer to Fig 1, connections at 4 and 5 O-rings.

Cause:  O-ring(s) at connections 4 and/or 5 may be damaged.

Remedy 8a: 

  1. Clean area where power steering hoses (Fig 1, 7 and 8) connect to power steering pump and steering gear.
  2. Start engine, then visually inspect power steering hose connections at power steering rack (Fig 1, 9) and pump (Fig 1, 6) for leakage.
    NOTE: Two sealing rings per connection (Fig 1, 4) are installed as of VIN A289565.
  3. Shut-off engine.
  4. Disconnect power steering hose(s) at leaky connection(s) and replace only leaking O-ring(s).
  5. Reassemble in reverse order (refer to torque specifications below).

Remedy 8b:  Bleed power steering system, refer to WIS Document AR46.30-P-0010P.

NOTE: The following allowable labor operations should be used when submitting a warranty claim for this repair.

Operation:  Power steering gear box/steering rack, R & R (46-3400)

Line - (one) control head to steering gear housing, seal/replace if required (steering rack removed) (46-6000)

Line - (both) control head to steering gear housing, seal/replace if required (steering rack removed) (46-6001)

Protective cap - input shaft on steering gear (steering removed), R & R, replace if necessary (46-7219)

Speed sensitive power steering p-valve, repl. (power steering gear box removed) (46-5178)

Tie rods - (all), R & R/replace as required (46-7001)

Tie rod - l/side, R & R/replace if required (46-7004)

Tie rod - r/side, R & R/replace if required (46-7005)

Play between thrust piece and rack (steering removed), check (46-4350)
