Lateral Acceleration Sensor, Function

NOTE: To view elements of the lateral acceleration sensor function, see Fig 3 .

Lateral acceleration occurs during cornering causing the spring/mass element to move from its normal position to a position corresponding to the degree of lateral acceleration. Every change in position changes the electrical capacitance of the detector. An electronic analysis function then generates a voltage signal which depends on the capacitance and, therefore, lateral acceleration of the vehicle. This voltage signal is examined by the ESP control module (N47-5).
