The risk of chest and head injuries is reduced in head-on collisions by the driver/front passenger airbag units  and the driver/front passenger emergency tensioning retractor  .

If a side impact occurs, the sidebag mainly protects the side of the chest and also the head because of its beneficial kinematics.

The driver-side/passenger-side airbag units are labeled SRS-Airbag. In vehicles with sidebags the SRS-Airbag lettering can be found on the door paneling.

SRS  : " upplemental- estraint- ystem", supplemental restraint system as supplemental restraint system.

Faults in the SRS system are indicated by the airbag indicator and warning lamp (A1e15)  (except model 140) on the instrument panel.

In vehicles with seat occupied recognition or automatic child seat recognition ( AKSE  ) the activation of the safety equipment at the passenger side is inhibited under certain conditions.

Seat occupied recognition:

If the front passenger seat is unoccupied, the activation of the front passenger airbag, the sidebag and the emergency tensioning retractor is inhibited.

Automatic child seat recognition (AKSE) :

If a special child seat is detected

(Child seat MB-Baby-Safe  ) on the front passenger seat the front passenger airbag is not  activated for safety reasons. The front passenger-side sidebag and emergency tensioning retractor remain active.

The operation of the system and the front passenger airbag cutout is (except model 140) indicated by the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp (E16) or the automatic child seat recognition warning lamp (N72e1)  .

The automatic child seat recognition also includes seat occupied recognition functions.
