Chronological sequence of sidebag deployment

IMPORTANT The illustration shows the chronological sequence of sidebag deployment after a heavy side impact.

The times that are shown are merely to indicate the extremely rapid speed at which the sidebag is inflated and deflated.

The values are therefore only examples and not generally valid in the sense of a specification or mandatory requirement.

Side impact (shown on model 220)

If a side impact occurs, the left sidebag and windowbag sensor (A53/1) or right sidebag and windowbag sensor (A54/1) checks the plausibility of the recorded acceleration values (crash data) from the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) and ignites the sidebag and windowbag squibs at the relevant side of the vehicle if necessary.

Front passenger side occupancy

The occupancy status of the front passenger seat is recorded by the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor (B48).

If the passenger seat is unoccupied, the front passenger sidebag and windowbag are not deployed. (Exception: in vehicles with seat belt buckle detection, the sidebag and windowbag are deployed if the latch has been inserted).

If an error is detected in the seat occupancy recognition system, the sidebags will be deployed in all crash situations.
