The airbag control module (N2/7) registers a high acceleration/ deceleration of the vehicle due to the collision. It passes on the deployment pulse to the ignition squibs for the driver-side emergency tensioning retractor (R12/1), passenger-side (R12/2), as well as left rear (R12/6) and right rear (R12/7) (if fitted).

The occupied status of the front passenger's seat is detected via the passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor (B48) If the front passenger seat is not occupied the emergency tensioning retractor on the front passenger side is not deployed. This also applies to a child seat with transponder mounted on the front passenger seat which is recognized by the control module but for which parameter set is not programmed.

The emergency tensioning retractors in the rear (if fitted) are always deployed in a rear end collision, even if the rear seats are not occupied.

USA ONLYversion

Before deploying the emergency tensioning retractors buckle scanning is carried out for the driver's and front passenger's seat. The driver and front passenger emergency tensioning retractors are not activated if the latch plates are not inserted.

Seat belt lock system

If the vehicle acceleration exceeds the value of 0.45 g or the vehicle inclination is > 27°, the vehicle-sensitive seatbelt lock sensor actuates (A60) the seat belt lock solenoid for the left front seat (Y96) and seat belt lock solenoid for the right front seat (Y96/1) via the seat control modules and the seat belt pull out is locked.
