Medium severe head-on collision
The illustration shows the chronological sequence of the emergency tensioning retractors in the event of a moderately severe head-on collision. The times that are given are merely for the purpose of illustrating the chronological sequence. The values are therefore only examples and not generally valid in the sense of a specification or mandatory requirement.
Moderately severe head-on collision (shown on model 215)
(1st triggering threshold)
In the event of a moderately severe head-on collision the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) registers moderate deceleration.
In this type of impact the seat belt restraining system function in combination with the emergency tensioning retractors ensures the best possible degree of passenger safety.
The restraint system control unit (N2/7) therefore only sends the ignition pulse to:
- The driver ETR squib (R12/1) and the front passenger ETR squib (R12/2)
- The left rear ETR squib(R12/6)and the right rear ETR squib (R12/7)
The driver and passenger emergency tensioning retractors will only be deployed if the occupants are wearing their seat belts.
Seat belt lock system
If the vehicle acceleration exceeds the value of 0.45 g (g = fall acceleration in m/sec.2) or the vehicle inclination is >27°, the vehicle-sensitive seat belt lock sensor (A60) actuates the left front seat belt lock solenoid (Y96) and the right front seat belt lock solenoid (Y96/1) via the seat control units, and the belt retractor is blocked.
Front passenger side occupancy
The occupancy status of the front passenger seat is recorded by the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor (B48). If the front passenger seat is unoccupied, the front passenger sidebags and windowbag are not deployed. This also applies to a child seat with transponder attached to the passenger seat that is detected by the control unit (N2/7) but whose parameter set has not been programmed.
Shown on model 202
Severe head-on collision
The illustration shows the chronological sequence of the front airbags and the emergency tensioning retractors in the event of a severe head-on collision. The times that are shown are merely to indicate the extremely rapid speed at which the sidebag is inflated and deflated. The values are therefore only examples and not generally valid in the sense of a specification or mandatory requirement.
Severe head-on collision (shown on model 220)
(2nd triggering threshold, 3rd triggering threshold)
In the event of a severe head-on collision the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) registers severe deceleration.
In this type of impact the airbag and seat belt system restraining functions in combination with the emergency tensioning retractors ensure the best possible degree of passenger safety.
The restraint systems control unit (N2/7) only sends the ignition pulse to the:
- Driver airbag squib (R12/3)
- Passenger airbag squib 1 (R12/4)
- driver ETR squib (R12/1)
- passenger ETR ignition squib (R12/2)
- left rear ETR squib (R12/6)
- right rear ETR squib (R12/7)
If necessary because of the severity of the impact the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) also sends the ignition pulse to the front passenger airbag squib 2 (R12/5).
Front passenger seat occupancy
The occupancy status of the front passenger seat is recorded by the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor (B48).
If the passenger seat is unoccupied, the front passenger side airbag, sidebag and ETR are not deployed. This also applies to a child seat with transponder attached to the passenger seat that is detected by the control unit, but whose parameter set has not been programmed.
Protection for vehicle occupants who are not belted in (only USA version, code 491)
In these vehicles a belt buckle query (driver seat, front passenger seat) is performed.
Driver side:
If the latch has not been inserted, the driver airbag is deployed when the 1st triggering threshold is exceeded.
Passenger side:
If the latch has not been inserted, the front passenger airbag is deployed when the 1st triggering threshold is exceeded (only ignition stage 1 in model 220) if the seat occupied recognition has detected that the front passenger seat is occupied.
