Valve Timing: Checking

  1. Valve timing is measured at intake valves No. 1 and 6. Remove hydraulic valve lifters and replace with Adjustable Rocker Arms (116 050 11 20). Adjust to zero clearance against base circle of camshaft lobe.
  2. Attach dial indicator with pointer resting vertically on valve spring retainer. Indicator must have .120" (3.00 mm) preload and dial should be set at "0".
  3. Rotate engine in direction of normal rotation until pointer moves .080" (2.00 mm), leaving a preload of .040" (1.0 mm). Readings should be in accordance with valve timing chart. Repeat procedure for No. 6 intake valve.
