SERVICE INFORMATION
This Service Information updates information published in the Model Year 1987 Introduction Manual, Models 107, 124, 126 and 201 and also includes information regarding the Becker model 780 radio for M.Y. 1988 (sections A-C).
A. COUPLING AMPLIFIER - MY 1988 MODEL 126 WITH SOUND SYSTEM
When exchanging a Becker radio on vehicles equipped with the sound system, disconnect the coupling amplifier from the radio chassis and install the coupling amplifier to the exchange chassis and secure. Do not exchange the coupling amplifier when exchanging the radio, unless the coupling amplifier is defective.
B. POWER CONNECTION - ALL MODELS
According to accepted practice, whenever performing any service work that requires the battery to be disconnected, ensure that the radio and the ignition key are turned off before reconnecting the battery. This is of particular importance for the M.Y. 1988 model 780 radio to ensure that the radio's logic circuitry is correctly initialized.
C. MODEL YEAR 1988 MODEL 780 BECKER RADIOS
The M.Y. 1988 model 780 Becker radio may not be exchanged for previous model radios. Warranty claims for the model 780 Becker radio will be returned if the model 780 radio is exchanged for earlier production radios. When exchanging the radio on pre-M.Y. 1988 vehicles, replace the radio with a corresponding model. Adherence to the aforementioned instructions will ensure acceptance of the warranty claim.
D. MODIFIED ANTI-THEFT ALARM CONNECTION AT RADIO - ALL MODELS AS OF MY 1986
Beginning with model year 1986, vehicles equipped with the anti-theft alarm provide anti-theft protection for the Becker Grand Prix radio as well. If the radio is removed while the anti-theft alarm is armed the radio will be rendered inoperative and can only be repaired by the radio manufacturer.
Several different versions of the connection of alarm harness to radio chassis have been used. A description of the various versions of alarm harness to radio chassis connections is listed below.
Model 107 vehicles produced prior to August 1986 and existing stock supplies of unmodified radios must be modified to version 3.
In all other models, the modification should only be performed when replacing a defective radio chassis. The modification procedure is described below. After performing the modification, a remark stating "Positive-lock connection installed on radio anti-theft alarm harness: (date)" should be entered in the inside cover of the vehicle's maintenance booklet.
- Version 1 utilizes a console mounted spring contact (Fig 1 ). This version is no longer used.
- Version 2 utilizes a positive-lock spade connection on the lower left of rear cover (Fig 2 ) or left rear lip of bottom cover (Fig 3 ). This version was phased into production in models 107, 124.193 and 201 in August 1986.
- Version 3 utilizes a positive-lock spade connection located on the center rear lip of the bottom cover. See Fig 4
.
Fig 5 illustrates a modified exchange radio. Only the center positive-lock spade connector should be used for connection to anti-theft alarm system.
- Version 4 utilizes a positive-lock spade connection riveted on the lower center of the rear cover (Fig 6 ). This version has been phased into production as of January 1987.
- Version 5 utilizes a strengthened positive lock spade connection riveted on the lower center of the rear cover. This version is installed as of M.Y. 1988 and is the current version.
PROCEDURE
1) MODELS 107, 124.193 AND 201
As of August 1986 production, a positive-lock spade connection on the lower left rear of the radio chassis is installed (version 2).
| Model | As Of Chassis End Number |
|---|---|
| 107.048 | 1A 055174 |
| 124.193 | 1F 019828 |
| 201 | 1F 269878 |
Model 107 vehicles prior to the production change must be updated to version 3 during their next scheduled maintenance or repair by removing the spring contact and bracket and installing a harness with positive-lock coupling and spring tab (1 and 2, Fig 7 ) (refer to modification procedure).
Model 124.193 and 201 vehicles prior to the production change should be updated to version 3 only when replacing a defective radio chassis (refer to modification procedure).
2) MODELS 124 AND 126
Models 124 and 126 were produced with the first version radios until December 1986.
As of the following chassis numbers version 3 is installed:
| Model | As Of Chassis End Number |
|---|---|
| 124 | 1A 396243 |
| 126 | 1A 309780 |
Remove the spring contact with harness and discard (arrow, Fig 8 ) and install a harness with positive-lock coupling and spring tab (1 and 2, Fig 8 ) whenever a defective radio chassis is replaced (refer to modification procedure).
To connect a positive-lock coupling to a radio chassis, the bottom cover of the chassis must have a spade connector (arrow, Fig 9 ) at its rear center (when installed). If not so equipped, the bottom cover must be replaced.
MODIFICATION PROCEDURE
- Remove radio.
- Remove spring contact with harness and discard.
- Exchange radio chassis bottom cover for one equipped with a spade connector at its rear center, if not already so equipped (Fig 9 ).
- Affix installation note label directly below existing label reading "2 X 20 Watt... " to top cover of radio chassis.NOTE: Exchange radios manufactured after 10/86 already have the new cover and label. For these radios, disregard steps 2 and 3.
- Push positive-lock plug of the new harness onto spade connector (ground) and 5-pole plug onto radio chassis.CAUTION: Connect positive-lock plug first, the 5-pole plug second.
- Push 1-pole of harness onto coupling of anti-theft alarm wiring harness, where previous spring contact was connected.
- Make sure that the positive-lock plug is not disconnected when installing the radio chassis in the console.
- Enter remark, "Positive-lock connection installed on radio anti-theft alarm harness: (date)", in inside cover of vehicle's maintenance booklet.

E. MODIFIED ANTI-THEFT ALARM CONTROL UNIT - ALL MODELS AS OF MY 1986
As of November 1985 production, a modified anti-theft alarm control unit (production code as of 4585 = 45th week of 1985) is installed.
| Model | Chassis End Number |
|---|---|
| 107 | A 042492 |
| 124 | A 163723 |
| 126 | A 219074 |
| 201 | F 184466 |
The modified control unit must be installed in vehicles prior to the production change in case of complaints of alarm activation while driving.
PROCEDURE
- Disconnect and cover the battery negative terminal.
- Remove front passenger footrest.
- Remove glove box (Model 107 only).
- Check the production code of anti-theft alarm control unit (arrow, Fig 10 ). To check the production code of the control unit in Model 107, remove control unit. Replace control units having a production code earlier than 4585.
- Check the pin sockets in 14-pole connector of control unit for proper soldering and contact. Do not pry off the connector by applying pressure from one side only. Always apply even pressure when pulling off and reconnecting any electrical connector to avoid bending the pin sockets. Using a pin as a gauge, rebend any loose fitting sockets (Fig 11
).NOTE: The pin of adaptor cable 809509 from the electrical connection kit 201 589 00 99 00 can be used as a gauge.
- Check anti-theft alarm system for proper operation. Reinstall all parts in reverse order of removal.
