SERVICE INFORMATION

Inspection of steering locks returned under warranty has revealed that incorrect installation of the lock during repair jobs causes it to jam, rendering it unusable. Therefore, the following guidelines must be observed during removal/installation of the steering lock. In the future, warranty claims for jammed steering locks will be rejected.

  1. The steering lock can only be installed with the lock cylinder in position "1". See Fig 2 . In position "1", the rectangular recess in the driver (48, Fig 1 ) is parallel with the steering lock axis, allowing the lock pin (39, arrow) to be pushed in. The electrical ignition/starter switch (S2/1, Fig 1 ) must be mounted on the steering lock for installation.
  2. If the steering lock is in position "O" (lock pin 39 blocked, lock bolt 39a extended), then the driver (48, Fig 1 ) must be turned to installation position "1" using a small screwdriver until an audible click indicating engagement can be heard. See Fig 2 .
NOTE: Do not turn the steering lock to position "3" without the ignition/starter switch (S2/1) attached. Doing so will cause the steering lock to irreversibly engage.
NOTE: Regarding shift lock: As of model year 1990, all models with automatic transmission are equipped with an automatic transmission shift lock. As a result, the ignition key can only be removed from the lock with the selection lever in position "P". With the steering lock removed and the lock cylinder installed, the shift lock slide must be pushed back through the bore for the Bowden cable in order to remove the ignition key. To adjust the shift lock, see SMS Repair Instructions, Automatic Transmission 722.3, Job 27-740.
  3. In replacement steering locks manufactured by "Huf", the mounting bores (45a) for the ignition/starter switch, as well as the vacuum switch (37c) in diesel models are not threaded. See Fig 3 . When installing the ignition/starter switch and the vacuum switch, threads must be cut in the steering column jacket tube using self-tapping screws. Do not cut threads with a screw tap.
