Diagnostic Index

Verify malfunction symptoms using the following diagnostic index, then go to the appropriate troubleshooting chart.

SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING (SKYACTIV-G)

Troubleshooting item	Description
Blown fuses (See BLOWN FUSES [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Fuse is damaged.
Check engine light illuminates (See CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATES [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Check engine light illuminates incorrectly.
Will not crank (See WILL NOT CRANK [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Starter does not work.
Hard to start/long crank/erratic start/erratic crank (See HARD TO START/LONG CRANK/ERRATIC START/ERRATIC CRANK [SKYACTIV-G] .)	There is ignition, but engine does not run under its own power. Long period of time required before engine starts.
Engine stalls-after start/at idle (See ENGINE STALLS-AFTER START/AT IDLE [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Stalling occurs if vehicle is left idling under no load. Stalling occurs when load (electric, A/C) is applied during idling. Stalling occurs if the accelerator pedal is depressed from an idling condition when accelerating from a stop.
Cranks normally but will not start (See CRANKS NORMALLY BUT WILL NOT START [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Cranking occurs but no ignition.
Engine oil warning light illuminated/message related to engine hydraulic pressure malfunction indicated in display (See ENGINE OIL WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED/MESSAGE RELATED TO ENGINE HYDRAULIC PRESSURE INDICATED IN DISPLAY [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Engine oil warning light illuminated. Message related to engine hydraulic pressure malfunction indicated in display.
Engine runs rough/rolling idle (See ENGINE RUNS ROUGH/ROLLING IDLE [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Idle speed lower than the specification. Idling speed unstable, increases/decreases.
Fast idle/runs on (See FAST IDLE/RUNS ON [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Engine speed continues at fast idle after warm-up. Engine runs after ignition is switched off.
Low idle/stalls during deceleration (See LOW IDLE/STALLS DURING DECELERATION [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Engine speed decreases when the accelerator pedal is released. Stalls during deceleration with the accelerator pedal fully released. When the accelerator pedal is fully released, vehicle stalls directly after vehicle stops.
Engine stalls/quits, engine runs rough, misses, buck/jerk, hesitation/stumble, surges (See ENGINE STALLS/QUITS, ENGINE RUNS ROUGH, MISSES, BUCK/JERK, HESITATION/STUMBLE, SURGES [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Stalling occurs while driving with the throttle open.
Lack/loss of power-acceleration/cruise (See LACK/LOSS OF POWER-ACCELERATION/CRUISE [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Engine speed increase delays when the accelerator pedal is fully depressed.
Knocking/pinging-acceleration/cruise (See KNOCKING/PINGING-ACCELERATION/CRUISE [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Abnormal combustion occurs under the condition such as the temperature in the combustion chamber is too high resulting in abnormal noise. Knocking sound occurs from the engine compartment during acceleration.
Poor fuel economy (See POOR FUEL ECONOMY [SKYACTIV-G] .)	The fuel consumption is high compared to the customer's expectations or the previous fuel consumption.
Emission compliance (See EMISSION COMPLIANCE [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Fails emissions test.
High oil consumption/leakage (See HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION/LEAKAGE [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Oil consumption is excessive.
Cooling system concerns-overheating (See COOLING SYSTEM CONCERNS-OVERHEATING [SKYACTIV-G] .)	The engine coolant temperature is abnormally high.
Cooling system concerns-runs cold (See COOLING SYSTEM CONCERNS-RUNS COLD [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Engine does not reach normal operating temperature.
Exhaust smoke (See EXHAUST SMOKE [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Blue, black, or white smoke from exhaust system.
Fuel odor (in engine compartment) (See FUEL ODOR (IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT) [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Gasoline fuel smell or visible leakage.
Engine noise (See ENGINE NOISE [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Engine noise from under hood.
Vibration concerns (engine) (See VIBRATION CONCERNS (ENGINE) [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Vibration from under hood or driveline.
Sulfuric smell occurs (See SULFURIC SMELL OCCURS [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Rotten egg smell (sulphur) from exhaust.
Spark plug condition (See SPARK PLUG CONDITION [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Incorrect spark plug condition.
Fuel refill concerns (See FUEL REFILL CONCERNS [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Fuel tank does not fill smoothly.
Fuel filling shut off concerns (See FUEL FILLING SHUT OFF CONCERNS [SKYACTIV-G] .)	Fuel does not shut off properly.
