COOLING SYSTEM CONCERNS-OVERHEATING (SKYACTIV-G) DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

Step Inspection Results Action
1 VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION CAUSED BY EFFECT OF VEHICLE USE CONDITION
  • Verify how the customer drives the vehicle by asking the customer the following:
    • Engine speed is high and remains high for continuous long periods
  • Is the engine generating excessive heat when driven?
Yes Explain to the customer that the vehicle is normal and give them advice how to use vehicle and provide a specific example of the conditions in which the engine overheats.
No Go to the next step.
2 VERIFY PCM DTCs
  • Perform the DTC inspection for the PCM. (See DTC INSPECTION .)
  • Are any DTCs displayed?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting.
(See DTC TABLE [PCM (SKYACTIV-G)] .)
No Go to the next step.
3 VERIFY MAGNETIC CLUTCH OF A/C COMPRESSOR OPERATION
  • Start the engine and warm it up completely.
  • Turn the A/C switch off.
  • Does the magnetic clutch engaged?
Yes Perform the symptom troubleshooting [A/C IS ALWAYS ON OR A/C COMPRESSOR RUNS CONTINUOUSLY].
No Go to the next step.
4 VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION CAUSED BY ECT SENSOR INPUT SIGNAL MALFUNCTION
  • Access the PCM PID [ECT] using the M-MDS. (See PID/DATA MONITOR INSPECTION .)
  • Is the ECT PID value same as indicator/warning light readings?
Yes Go to Step 6.
No Go to the next step.
5 VERIFY ECT SENSOR FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Inspect the instrument cluster.
(Refer to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INSPECTION in service information.)
If there is any malfunction:
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G 2.0] in service information.)
6 VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION CAUSED BY COOLING FAN OPERATION MALFUNCTION
  • Perform the Cooling Fan Control System Inspection. (Refer to [COOLING FAN MOTOR INSPECTION ] in service information.)
  • Does the cooling fan control system operate properly?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
7 VERIFY COOLING SYSTEM CAP FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
8 INSPECT RELATED PART CONDITION
  • Inspect the following:
    • Engine coolant performance deterioration
    • Coolant leakage (engine internal, external)
    • Water and anti-freeze mixture
    • Thermostat (not fully open)
    • Fuse
    • Foreign matter penetration into engine coolant
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Go to the next step.
9 VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION CAUSED BY LACK OF ENGINE COOLANT  Yes Add engine coolant and verify that there is no engine coolant leakage.
(Refer to [ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT ] in service information.)
(Refer to ENGINE COOLANT LEAKAGE INSPECTION [SKYACTIV-G 2.0] in service information.)
If there is any malfunction:
  • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Go to the next step.
10 DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS THERMOSTAT OR OTHER
  • Verify the radiator hose tension.
    WARNING:
    • To prevent burns, use a cloth with your hand to verify the tension of the radiator hose.
  • After the engine warms up, does the engine coolant circulate to the radiator hose?
Yes Go to Step 12.
No Go to the next step.
11 INSPECT THERMOSTAT FOR MALFUNCTION  Yes Inspect the water pump.
No Replace the thermostat and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to THERMOSTAT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G 2.0] in service information.)
12 VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION CAUSED BY DRIVE BELT MALFUNCTION  Yes Go to the next step.
No Replace the drive belt and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to DRIVE BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G 2.0] in service information.)
13 VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION CAUSED BY RADIATOR CLOGGING
  • Inspect for clogging in the radiator.
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification 1.
No Replace the engine coolant and perform the repair completion verification 1.
(Refer to [ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT ] in service information.)
Repair completion verification 1 VERIFY THAT VEHICLE IS REPAIRED
  • Install/connect the part removed/disconnected during the troubleshooting procedure.
  • Has the malfunction symptom been eliminated?
Yes Complete the symptom troubleshooting. (Explain contents of repair to customer)
No Refer to the controller area network (CAN) malfunction diagnosis flow to inspect for a CAN communication error. (See MALFUNCTION DIAGNOSIS FLOW [CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK (CAN)] .)
