KNOCKING/PINGING - ACCELERATION/CRUISE (SKYACTIV-G, US) DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

Step	Inspection	Results	Action
1	VERIFY PCM DTC Perform the DTC inspection for the PCM. (See DTC INSPECTION .) Are any DTCs displayed?	Yes	Repair the malfunctioning location according to the applicable DTC troubleshooting. (See DTC TABLE [PCM (SKYACTIV-G (US))] .)
1		No	Go to the next step.
2	REPLACE FUEL Drain the remaining fuel in the fuel tank and add the specified fuel. Leave idling for approx. 15 min to refill the hose with fuel. Does the symptom disappear?	Yes	Symptom troubleshooting completed. (If customer has used fuel additive, give them advice not to use it)
2		No	Go to the next step.
3	VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS OVERHEATING WARNING: While performing this step, always operate the vehicle in a safe and lawful manner. When the M-MDS is used to observe monitor system status while driving, be sure to have another technician with you, or record the data in the M-MDS using the PID/DATA MONITOR AND RECORD capturing function and inspect later. Access the ECT PID using the M-MDS. (See PID/DATA MONITOR INSPECTION .) Is the ECT PID value less than 116°C {241°F} during driving?	Yes	Go to the next step.
3		No	The cause of this concern could be from the cooling system overheating. Perform the symptom troubleshooting "COOLING SYSTEM CONCERNS-OVERHEATING". (See COOLING SYSTEM CONCERNS-OVERHEATING (US) .)
4	VERIFY SPARK PLUG CONDITION Remove all spark plugs. (See SPARK PLUG REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G (VIN M (US))] .) (See SPARK PLUG REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G (VIN L (US))] .) Inspect the spark plug. (See SPARK PLUG INSPECTION [SKYACTIV-G (VIN M (US))] .) (See SPARK PLUG INSPECTION [SKYACTIV-G (VIN L (US))] .) Is there any malfunction?	Yes	Replace the spark plug and perform the repair completion verification. (See SPARK PLUG REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G (VIN M (US))] .) 4		No	Go to the next step.
5	INSPECT INTAKE AIR SYSTEM FOR AIR SUCTION Verify if there is air suction into the intake air system (such as between MAF sensor and intake valve, vacuum hose, evaporative hose, ventilation hose). (See VACUUM HOSE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G (VIN M (US))] .) (See VACUUM HOSE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G (VIN L (US))] .) (See EMISSION SYSTEM LOCATION INDEX [SKYACTIV-G (VIN M (US))] .) 5		No	Go to the next step.
6	INSPECT MAP SENSOR Access the following PIDs using the MMDS: (See PID/DATA MONITOR INSPECTION .) MAP BARO Measure the intake manifold vacuum when idling (no load). (See INTAKE MANIFOLD VACUUM INSPECTION [SKYACTIV-G (VIN M (US))] .) (See INTAKE MANIFOLD VACUUM INSPECTION [SKYACTIV-G (VIN L (US))] .) Does the difference between PIDs BARO and MAP nearly match the intake manifold vacuum value?	Yes	Go to the next step.
6		No	Replace the MAP sensor/IAT sensor No. 2 and perform the repair completion verification. (See MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE (MAP) SENSOR/INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE (IAT) SENSOR NO. 2 REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G (VIN M (US))] .) 7	INSPECT MAF SENSOR FOR MALFUNCTION Inspect the applicable part. (See MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) SENSOR INSPECTION [SKYACTIV-G (VIN M (US))] .) (See MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) SENSOR INSPECTION [SKYACTIV-G (VIN L (US))] .) Is the part normal?	Yes	Go to the next step.
7		No	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification. 11	INSPECT KS FOR MALFUNCTION Inspect the applicable part. (See KNOCK SENSOR (KS) INSPECTION [SKYACTIV-G (VIN M (US))] .) (See KNOCK SENSOR (KS) INSPECTION [SKYACTIV-G (VIN L (US))] .) Is the part normal?	Yes	Remove the accumulated matter in the cylinder head using the following procedure: Carbon remover Overhauling Go to repair completion verification.
11		No	Repair or replace the malfunctioning location and perform the repair completion verification. (See KNOCK SENSOR (KS) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G (VIN M (US))] .) (See KNOCK SENSOR (KS) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SKYACTIV-G (VIN L (US))] .)
Repair completion verification 1	VERIFY THAT VEHICLE IS REPAIRED Install/connect the part removed/disconnected during the troubleshooting procedure. Has the malfunction symptom been eliminated?	Yes	Complete the symptom troubleshooting. (Explain contents of repair to customer)
Repair completion verification 1		No	Refer to the controller area network (CAN) malfunction diagnosis flow to inspect for a CAN communication error. (See CONTROLLER AREA NETWORK (CAN) MALFUNCTION DIAGNOSIS FLOW [(US)] .) If the CAN communication is normal, perform the diagnosis from Step 1. If the malfunction recurs, go to the next step.
Repair completion verification 2	VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION IS CAUSED BY NOT PERFORMING PCM REPROGRAMMING Verify repair information and verify that there is a new calibration in the PCM. Is there a new calibration in the PCM?	Yes	Perform the PCM reprogramming and verify if the malfunction symptom was corrected. If the malfunction recurs, replace the PCM.
