Torque Converter Removal/Installation

  1. Remove the transmission. (See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  2. Remove the torque converter, and immediately turn it so that the hole faces upward. This will help to keep any remaining ATF from spilling.

    CAUTION:
    • The oil seal can be easily damaged by the sharp edges of the torque converter splines. Do not let the splines contact the oil seal.
    • Do not drop the torque converter.
    • Be careful not to get your fingers pinched.
  3. Drain any ATF remaining in the torque converter.
  4. Using a flathead screwdriver, position the drive gear on the oil pump component to the center.
  5. Install the torque converter to the transmission.

  6. To ensure that the torque converter is installed accurately, measure distance A between the end of the torque converter and the end of the converter housing.

    Distance A between end of torque converter and face of converter housing 

    • 21.4 mm {0.843 in} or more
  7. Install the automatic transmission. (See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  8. Perform the mechanical system test. (See MECHANICAL SYSTEM TEST .)
