No.13 Knocking/Pinging: Notes

13 KNOCKING/PINGING
DESCRIPTION
  • Sound is produced when air/fuel mixture is ignited by something other than a spark plug (e.g., hot spot in the combustion chamber).
POSSIBLE CAUSE
  • Engine overheating due to cooling system malfunction
  • Air leakage or restriction from intake-air system
  • Poor fuel quality (i.e. Fuel RON is not specified, excessive cleaning agents added in fuel)
  • Exhaust system and/or TWC restriction
  • Charge air cooler malfunction
  • PCM DTC is stored
  • KS or related circuit malfunction
  • EGR system malfunction
  • Improper operation of drive-by-wire system
  • Variable swirl valve stuck closed
  • Wastegate control solenoid valve malfunction (stuck close)
  • Ignition system malfunction
    • Spark plug malfunction
    • Ignition coil malfunction
    • Ignition coil related wiring harness malfunction
  • Erratic or no signal from CMP sensor
    • Loose installation
    • Damaged trigger wheel (camshaft)
    • Open or short circuit in related wiring harness
  • Erratic signal from CKP sensor
    • Loose installation
    • Damaged trigger wheel (crankshaft pulley)
    • Open or short circuit in related wiring harness
  • Erratic signal to PCM
    • APP sensor or related circuit malfunction
    • ECT sensor No.1 or related circuit malfunction
    • IAT sensor (integrated in MAF/IAT sensor) or related circuit malfunction
    • MAF sensor (integrated in MAF/IAT sensor) or related circuit malfunction
    • MAP sensor (integrated in MAP sensor/boost air temperature sensor) or related circuit malfunction
    • Boost air temperature sensor (integrated in MAP sensor/boost air temperature sensor) or related circuit malfunction
    • TP sensor or related circuit malfunction
  • Inadequate fuel pressure (high or low pressure side)
    • Fuel pressure sensor malfunction
    • High pressure fuel pump malfunction
    • Spill valve control solenoid valve control circuit malfunction (damage to driver in PCM caused by short circuit to ground system)
    • Spill valve control solenoid valve (built-into high pressure fuel pump) malfunction
    • Relief valve (built-into fuel delivery pipe) malfunction
    • Fuel line restricted or clogged
    • Fuel pump unit malfunction
  • Incorrect fuel injection timing
  • Fuel injector malfunction
  • Inadequate engine compression
  • Improper valve timing
  • Fuel injector control driver (built-into PCM) malfunction
  • Engine internal part malfunction
WARNING:
  • The following troubleshooting flow chart contains the fuel system diagnosis and repair procedures. Read the following warnings before performing the fuel system services:
    • Fuel vapor is hazardous. It can easily ignite, causing serious injury and damage. Always keep sparks and flames away from fuel.
    • Fuel line spills and leakage are dangerous. Fuel can ignite and cause serious injury or death and damage. Fuel can also irritate skin and eyes. To prevent this, always complete "BEFORE SERVICE PRECAUTION" and "AFTER SERVICE PRECAUTION" described in this manual. (See BEFORE SERVICE PRECAUTION .) (See AFTER SERVICE PRECAUTION .)
CAUTION:
  • Disconnecting/connecting the quick release connector without cleaning it may possibly cause damage to the fuel pipe and quick release connector. Always clean the quick release connector joint area before disconnecting/connecting, and make sure that it is free of foreign material.
