Steering Column - Automatic Transmission: Disassembly
All vehicles
- Remove the steering column. See STEERING COLUMN , .
- Remove the ignition switch.
- Remove the 2 screws.
- Remove the ignition switch.
- Remove the clockspring. See

CAUTION:
- Carefully note the position of the steering column lock gear, bearing and retainer prior to removal.
- Remove the snap ring.
- Remove the steering column lock housing bearing.
- Remove the steering column lock gear.
- Remove the gearshift lever pin and the gearshift lever.
Vehicles with tilt column
- Remove the sensor ring.
- Remove the steering column lower bearing spring.
- Remove the sensor ring.
Vehicles with fixed column
- Remove the snap ring from the bottom of the steering column shaft.
All vehicles
- Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring from the steering column shaft.
- Remove the 2 lock cylinder housing pivot screws.
Vehicles with fixed columns
- Remove the 2 lock cylinder housing screws and the steering column spacer.
All vehicles
WARNING:- The steering column position spring is under tension and can come out with great force. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
- Remove the steering column lock cylinder housing and the steering column shaft from the steering actuator housing.
- Pry up on the steering column locking levers using a shop fabricated tool.
- On tilt steering columns, remove the steering column position spring.
- Using a flat-blade screwdriver, pry up on the flush surface of the turn indicator cancel cam and remove.
- Remove the snap ring.
- Remove the steering column upper bearing spring.
- Remove the steering column bearing sleeve.
- Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring.
- Slide the steering column shaft in toward the steering column lock cylinder housing.
- Slide the steering column bearing tolerance ring from the steering column shaft and remove the shaft.
- Using a punch, remove the steering column upper bearing from the steering column lock cylinder housing.
Vehicles with tilt column
- Use a punch to remove the steering column lower bearing from the steering column lock cylinder housing.
All vehicles
CAUTION:- If installing a new transaxle shift selector position insert, make sure that the correct part is being installed.
- Remove the brake shift interlock solenoid and the transaxle shift position insert.
- Remove the 3 bolts.
- Remove the brake shift interlock solenoid and the transaxle shift position insert.
- Remove the shift tube.
- Remove the 4 bolts.
- Remove the 2 shift tube clamps.
- Remove the shift tube.
- Remove the transaxle shift arm assembly.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Remove the transaxle shift arm assembly.
- Remove the spring.
- Drive out the gearshift lever pin from the shift tube.
- Remove the gearshift lever.
- Remove the column shift selector lever plunger.
- If it is bent, replace the column shift selector lever plunger.
- Remove the 2 gearshift lever socket bushings and the transaxle control selector lever spring clip.
- Remove the steering column lock pawl.
- Drive out the steering column lock lever pin.
- Remove the steering column lock pawl.
- Remove the steering column lower bearing and sleeve.
- Remove the steering column lower bearing retainer.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the steering column lower bearing retainer.
- Remove the steering column upper and lower lock actuators.
Assembly
All vehicles
NOTE:
- Use premium long-life grease to lubricate the steering column lock actuators.
- Install the steering column lock actuators.
- Install the steering column upper lock actuator.
- Install the steering column lower lock actuator.
NOTE:- Coat all surfaces with premium long-life grease.
- Install the steering column lock pawl.
- Position the steering column lock pawl.
- Drive in the steering column lock lever pin.
- Install the steering column lower bearing retainer.
- Position the steering column lower bearing retainer.
- Install the 2 bolts and tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
NOTE:- The UP position of the bearing must be facing forward, toward the engine.
NOTE:- Install the steering column lower bearing and sleeve so that the inner race is visible when installed.
- Install the steering column lower bearing and sleeve.COMPONENTS REFERENCE
1 Outer race 2 Bearing (in the UP position) 3 Ball 4 Inner race - Install the transaxle control selector lever spring clip and the gearshift lever socket bushings on the shift tube.
- Coat the gearshift lever socket bushings with premium long-life grease.
- Install the column shift selector lever plunger.
- Coat the column shift selector plunger with premium long-life grease.
- Position the gearshift lever in the shift tube.
CAUTION:
- Gearshift lever pin must be installed correctly or 1st gear position may be blocked.
- Install the gearshift lever pin in the shift tube.
- Install the gearshift selector tube spring in the shift tube.
- Coat the end of the spring with premium long-life grease.
- Install the transaxle selector lever arm and support on the shift tube.
- Position the transaxle selector lever arm and support.
- Install the 2 bolts and tighten to 15 Nm (12 lb-ft).
- Install the shift tube.
- Position the shift tube.
- Position the 2 shift tube clamps.
- Install the 4 bolts and tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
CAUTION:- If installing a new transaxle shift selector position insert, make sure that the correct part is being installed.
- Install the brake shift interlock solenoid.
- Position the brake shift interlock solenoid.
- Install the 3 bolts and tighten to 9 N-m (0.9 kgf-m, 80 in-lbf).
CAUTION:- Install the upper steering column bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.
- Using an appropriate bearing installer or socket, install the steering column upper bearing on the steering column lock cylinder housing.COMPONENTS REFERENCE

CAUTION:- Install the large steering column bearing so that the inner race is visible when installed.
NOTE:- Use an appropriate bearing installer or socket.
- Install the steering column lower bearing into the steering column lock cylinder housing.COMPONENTS REFERENCE

- Position the steering column shaft in the steering column lock cylinder housing.
- Install the steering column bearing tolerance ring on the steering column shaft.
- Install the steering column bearing sleeve.
- Install the steering column upper bearing spring.
- Install the snap ring.
- Install the turn indicator cancel cam.
- Install the lock cylinder housing screws loosely and position the steering actuator housing in a vise.
- Lubricate the lock cylinder housing screws with premium long-life grease.
NOTE:- Lubricate the lock cylinder housing bushings with premium long-life grease.
- Position the steering column lock cylinder housing and the steering column shaft in the steering actuator housing.
- Make sure the upper and lower steering column lock actuators are aligned.
- Position the steering column locking levers on the steering actuator housing.
- Use a shop fabricated tool.
- Install and compress the steering column position spring.
- Position the lock cylinder housing and steering actuator housing. Install the 2 screws and tighten to 22 N-m (2.2 kgf-m, 16 ft-lbf).
Vehicles with tilt column
- Position the lock cylinder housing and steering actuator housing.
- Tighten the lock cylinder housing screws to 22 N-m (2.2 kgf-m, 16 ft-lbf).
Vehicles with fixed column
- Position the steering column spacer and install the 2 lock cylinder housing screws.
- To install, tighten to 22 N-m (2.2 kgf-m, 16 ft-lbf).
Vehicles with tilt column
- Install the sensor ring.
- Install the sensor ring.
- Install the steering column lower bearing spring.
Vehicles with fixed column
- Install the steering column bearing tolerance ring.
All vehicles
- Install ignition switch.
- Align the ignition switch with the slot and index mark on the steering column.
- Install the 2 screws and tighten to 6 N-m (0.6 kgf-m, 53 in-lbf).
NOTE:- The narrow section of the keyhole in the lock gear must be in the 1 o'clock position.
- Install the steering column lock gear.
- Use premium long-life grease to coat the steering column lock gear.
- Install the steering column lock housing bearing.
- The narrow section of the keyhole should be in the 1 o'clock position, with the tab inboard at the 3 o'clock position and rotate it counterclockwise.
- Lubricate the steering column lock housing bearing with premium long-life grease.
- Install the bearing retainer firmly to engage the 4 retention tabs into the lock housing.
- Install the gearshift lever and the gearshift lever pin.
- Install the multi-function switch and 2 screws.
- Tighten to 3 N-m (0.3 kgf-m, 27 in-lbf).
- Install the clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING , .
- Install the steering column. See STEERING COLUMN , .
