Extreme Spark Retard Position

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2002 Mazda Protege5, 2002 Mazda Protege, 2002 Mazda Millenia, 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Remove Variable Valve Timing (VVT) actuator.
CAUTION: If engine oil gets on parts, they may not function properly. When removing VVT actuator, be sure to cover other parts with a cloth to protect them from oil.
  3. Ensure camshaft dowel pin hole on VVT actuator is aligned with top of third tooth, by counting back 3 teeth to sprocket gap which is aligned with alignment mark. See Fig 1 . If not as specified, stopper pin in VVT actuator is not engaged at position of maximum valve timing retard. Replace VVT actuator.
  4. Install VVT actuator.
