Removal and Installation
- Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
- Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING .
- Remove the 2 screws and position the hood release handle aside.
- Remove the screws, pull out the release the retaining clips and remove the lower steering column opening finish panel.
- Remove the 5 steering column finish panel reinforcement bolts and the steering column finish panel reinforcement.
- To install, tighten to 7 N-m (0.7 kgf-m, 62 in-lbf).
- Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
- Disconnect the multi-function switch electrical connector.
- Disconnect the clockspring electrical connectors.
- Remove the ground bolt.
- Release the pin-type retainers and disconnect the electrical connectors.
- Remove the transmission range indicator bolt and the transmission range indicator.
- To install, tighten to 3 N-m (0.3 kgf-m, 27 in-lbf).
- Disconnect the shift cable from the shift tube lever and the steering column bracket.
- Disconnect the brake shift interlock solenoid electrical connector.NOTE:
- Secure the steering column in place so it will not turn after the pinch bolt is removed.
- Remove the upper steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt and disconnect the shaft from the steering column.
- Discard the bolt.
- To install, tighten to 27 N-m (2.8 kgf-m, 20 ft-lbf).
- Remove the steering column support bracket nuts and the steering column.
- To install, tighten to 15 N-m (1.1 kgf-m, 11 ft-lbf).NOTE:
- A new upper steering column shaft bolt must be installed.
- To install, tighten to 15 N-m (1.1 kgf-m, 11 ft-lbf).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
