Removal and Installation

WARNING:
  • Use of any other than approved DOT 3 motor vehicle brake fluid will cause permanent damage to brake components and will render the brakes inoperative. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal in-Jury.
WARNING:
  • Brake fluid contains polyglycol ethers and polyglycols. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. If brake fluid contacts eyes, flush eyes with running water for 15 minutes. Get medical attention if irritation persists. If taken internally, drink water and induce vomiting. Get medical attention immediately. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
CAUTION:
  • Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water.
CAUTION:
  • Electronic modules are sensitive to electrical charges. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) module can be damaged if exposed to these charges.
  1. Disconnect the battery. See BATTERY DISCONNECT .
  2. Remove the air cleaner and the air cleaner outlet pipe. See AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE -- 2.3L or AIR CLEANER OUTLET PIPE -- 3.0L (4V) .
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector by rotating the protective cover.

  4. Disconnect the brake line fittings.
    • Cap the brake lines.
  5. Remove the HCU bracket-to-frame bolts.
  6. If replacing only the HCU, remove the ABS module screws and the ABS module.
  7. Remove the bracket-to-HCU bolts.
  8. Remove the HCU.
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
