Pinpoint Test 1: Loss Of Coolant

PINPOINT TEST 1 LOSS OF COOLANT
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK THE ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL
NOTE:
  • Allow the engine to cool before checking the engine coolant level.
  • Key OFF.
  • Visually check the engine coolant level at the degas bottle
  • Is the engine coolant level within specification? 
Yes Go to next step.
No REFILL the engine coolant as necessary. Go to step 4.
2 CHECK THE DEGAS BOTTLE PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE
WARNING:
  • To avoid personal injury, do not unscrew the coolant pressure relief cap while the engine is operating or hot. The cooling system is under pressure; steam and hot liquid can come out forcefully when the cap is loosened slightly.
  • Inspect the pressure relief cap for foreign material between the sealing gasket and the diaphragm.
  • Is the pressure relief cap OK? 
Yes Go to step 5.
No CLEAN or INSTALL a new pressure relief cap. TEST the system for normal operation. Go to next step.
3 CHECK THE ENGINE COOLANT FOR INTERNAL LEAK
  • Key OFF.
  • Inspect the engine coolant in the degas bottle for signs of engine oil or transaxle fluid (A/T only).
  • Is oil evident in the coolant? 
Yes If engine oil is evident, GO to ENGINE INSPECTION  .
If transaxle fluid is evident, REPAIR or REPLACE the radiator.
No Go to next step.
4 CHECK THE ENGINE AND THE TRANSAXLE (A/T ONLY) FOR COOLANT
  • Remove the oil level dipsticks from the engine and transaxle.
  • Is coolant evident in the oil? 
Yes If coolant is in the engine, GO to ENGINE INSPECTION  .
If coolant is in the transaxle, REPAIR or REPLACE the radiator.
No Go to next step.
5 PRESSURE TEST THE ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM
  • Carry out the cooling system pressure test.
  • Does the engine cooling system leak? 
Yes REPAIR or REPLACE components as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.
No Go to next step.
6 CHECK DEGAS BOTTLE
NOTE:
  • Allow the engine to cool before adding coolant to the degas bottle.
  • Add coolant to the degas bottle until the fluid is between the fill marks.
  • Does the degas bottle leak? 
Yes REPLACE the degas bottle. TEST the system for normal operation.
No System is operating correctly at this time.
