17 FUEL ODOR IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT
DESCRIPTION
  • Gasoline fuel smell or visible leaks
FUEL ODOR IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT INSPECTION/ACTION CHART

STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 PRELIMINARY CHECKS
  • Perform the following preliminary checks:
    • Fuel lines.
    • EVAP system (canister, canister vent solenoid, rollover/vent valve and related vacuum hoses).
    • Fuel system (fuel injectors, fuel rail, fuel tank).
  • Are all checks OK? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Service as required.
Verify symptom no longer exists.
2 VERIFY THAT FUEL PUMP IS OFF WHEN ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING
NOTE:
  • This condition would be associated with a fuel odor with the engine off.
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Wait 30 seconds and verify that the fuel pump shuts off after 5 seconds.
  • Key OFF.
  • Does fuel pump shut off? 
Yes Go to next step.
No FUEL PUMP ALWAYS ON  .
3 CHECK EVAP SYSTEM Yes Service as required.
No Go to next step.
4 PERFORM PCM QUICK TEST
See PCM QUICK TEST  .
  • Are any DTCs displayed during Continuous Memory, Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO), or Key ON, Engine Running (KOER) Self-Tests? 
Yes Check for cause.
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE NUMBERS  .
No Go to next step.
5 CHECK FUEL SYSTEM
  • Check fuel system for possible sources of fuel odor.
  • Is a fault indicated? 
Yes Service as required.
No Go to next step.

  • Verify test results. If OK, see DIAGNOSTIC INDEX  to service any additional symptoms.
