Steering Gear: Notes
- Raise and support the vehicle.NOTE:
- 3.0L engine shown, 2.3L engine similar.
- Remove the rear transaxle insulator bracket.
- Remove the bolt.
- Remove the nuts.
- Remove the through bolt.
NOTE:- LH side shown, RH similar.
- Remove the tie rod end nut.
- Remove the cotter pin.
- Remove the nut.
NOTE:- LH side shown, RH similar.
- Using the special tool, separate the tie rod end from the knuckle.NOTE:
- Record the number of turns required to remove the tie rod end.
- Remove the tie rod ends and the tie rod end jam nuts. See TIE ROD END - OUTER .
- Remove the steering gear coupling pinch bolt.
- Slide the boot up.
- Remove the steering gear coupling pinch bolt.
- Remove the power steering pressure and return line bracket bolts.NOTE:
- Drain the excess power steering fluid into a suitable drain pan.
NOTE:- The power steering pressure and return lines are of different diameters and the O-rings are not interchangeable.
If the O-rings are damaged or deteriorated, install new O-rings.
NOTE:- Cap the power steering lines to prevent the entry of contaminants and debris.
- Disconnect the power steering pressure and return lines.
- Remove the bolt.
- Disconnect the power steering pressure and return lines.
- Lower the vehicle on the hoist.
- Remove the steering shaft.
- Remove the steering shaft boot.
- Remove the nuts.
- Remove the steering shaft boot.
NOTE:- LH shown; RH similar.
- Remove the two steering gear mounting bolts.
- Raise the vehicle on the hoist.NOTE:
- With the mounting bolts removed, slide the gear forward to separate the steering coupling from the steering gear shaft.
- Remove the steering gear.
- If replacing the steering gear, remove the inner tie rod ends. See TIE ROD END - INNER .
