Variable Inertia Charge System (VICS) Shutter Valve Actuator Inspection
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mazda Protege5, 2003 Mazda Protege, 2003 Mazda MX-5 Miata, 2003 Mazda MPV, and 2003 Mazda 6. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Carry out VICS Operation Inspection. See VICS OPERATION INSPECTION . If operation is not as specified, disconnect vacuum hose from VICS shutter valve actuator. See Figure. Connect vacuum pump to VICS shutter valve actuator. Slowly apply vacuum and inspect rod movement of VICS shutter valve actuator. See VICS SHUTTER VALVE VACUUM APPLICATION (PROTEGE & PROTEGE5) table. If VICS shutter valve actuator operates as specified, inspect vacuum hoses for proper routing, kinks or leakage. If VICS shutter valve actuator does not operate as specified, replace VICS shutter valve actuator. After repair, return vehicle to original condition.
