Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Verify Related Repair Information Availability -  Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to DLC-2. See Figure. Turn ignition on, engine off. Monitor for FREEZE FRAME DATA and ensure data has been recorded. Check service bulletins for repair information related to this DTC. If repair information is not available, go to next step. If repair information is available, perform diagnosis and repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  7.
  2. Identify Trigger DTC For Freeze Frame Data -  Identify DTC recorded in monitored FREEZE FRAME DATA screen. If DTC P0106 appears in FREEZE FRAME DATA screen, go to next step. If different DTC than P0106 appears in FREEZE FRAME DATA screen, follow appropriate DTC diagnostic procedure.
  3. Inspect Connection Of EGR Boost Sensing Related Vacuum Hoses -  Turn ignition off. Inspect EGR boost sensing related vacuum hoses for loose, damage, improper connection and/or leakage as follows:
    • From EGR boost sensor to EGR boost sensor solenoid.
    • From EGR boost sensor solenoid to EGR pipe.

If related vacuum hoses are okay, go to next step. If related vacuum hoses are faulty, replace or repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  7.

  4. Inspect EGR Boost Sensor Solenoid Air Filter For Clogging -  Inspect EGR boost sensor solenoid air filter for clogging. If EGR boost sensor solenoid air filter is okay, go to next step. If EGR boost sensor solenoid air filter is clogged, repair clogging as necessary. After repair, go to step  7.
  5. Inspect EGR Boost Sensor Solenoid For Being Stuck Open Or Close -  Inspect EGR boost sensor solenoid for being stuck open or close. See EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION SYSTEM under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MAZDA6, MIATA, MPV, PROTEGE & PROTEGE5 article. If EGR boost sensor solenoid is okay, go to next step. If EGR boost sensor solenoid is faulty, replace EGR boost sensor solenoid. After repair, go to step  7.
  6. Inspect EGR Boost Sensor -  Inspect EGR boost sensor. See EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION SYSTEM under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MAZDA6, MIATA, MPV, PROTEGE & PROTEGE5 article. If EGR boost sensor is okay, go to next step. If EGR boost sensor is faulty, replace EGR boost sensor. After repair, go to next step.
  7. Verify Troubleshooting Of DTC P0106 Completed -  Return vehicle to original condition. Using scan tool, clear DTCs from PCM memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine and run DRIVE MODES 1, 2 and 3. See DRIVE MODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing drive modes, monitor for DTCs. If same DTC is not present, go to next step. If same DTC P0106 is present, replace PCM. For PCM removal and installation, see POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. After repair, go to next step.
  8. Verify After Repair Procedure -  Using scan tool, perform After Repair Procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE . If no other DTCs are present, testing is complete. If any other DTC is present, follow appropriate DTC diagnostic procedure. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
