Diagnostic Procedures

CAUTION: DO NOT crank engine before replacement PCM is programed to immobilizer system or PCM will be severely damaged. If test procedures require replacement of PCM on a vehicle equipped with immobilizer system, vehicle must be sent to authorized Mazda dealer to have replacement PCM programed.
  1. Check for service bulletins and on-line information. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to next step.
  2. Inspect Battery -  Turn ignition off. Check battery. If battery is okay, go to next step. If battery is faulty, replace battery. After repair, go to step  5.
  3. Inspect Poor Installation Of Generator Terminal -  Turn ignition off. Check generator terminal "B" installation nut. If installation nut is tight, go to next step. If installation nut is loose, tighten generator terminal installation nut. After repair, go to step  5.
  4. Inspect Poor Installation Of Battery Positive Terminal -  Check positive battery cable terminal. If positive battery terminal is tight, go to next step. If terminal is loose, tighten positive battery terminal. After repair, go to step  6.
  5. Inspect Battery Charging Circuit -  Start engine, disconnect positive battery terminal. If engine does not die, go to next step. If engine dies, repair open circuit between generator ring terminal "B" (Black/Red wire) and positive battery terminal. See appropriate wiring diagram under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to next step.
  6. Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTC P1634 Completed -  Reconnect all components. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Turn ignition off. Start engine. Recheck DTCs. If DTC P1634 is present, replace PCM. After repair, go to next step. If DTC P1634 is not present, go to next step.
  7. Verify After Repair Procedure -  Using scan tool, perform after repair procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE . If DTC is not present, testing is complete. If any DTC is present, go to appropriate test for diagnosis and repair.
