Diagnostic Procedures
- Record freeze frame data. Check for service bulletins and on-line information. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to next step.
- Verify Stored DTC - Turn ignition off. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, retrieve DTCs. If DTC P1487 is also present, diagnose and repair first. See DTC P1487: EGR BOOST SENSOR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION . If DTC P1487 is not present, go to next step.
- Identify Trigger DTC For Freeze Frame Data - If DTC P0106 is on FREEZE FRAME DATA, go to next step. If DTC P0106 is not on FREEZE FRAME DATA, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
- Inspect Connection Of EGR Boost Sensing Related Vacuum Hoses - Check for loose, damaged or improperly connected vacuum hoses between EGR boost sensor, EGR boost sensor solenoid and EGR valve. If problems are not present, go to next step. If any problems are present, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 8.
- Inspect EGR Boost Sensor Solenoid Air Filter For Clog - Check EGR boost sensor solenoid air filter. If filter is okay, go to next step. If filter is clogged, clean or replace. After repair, go to step 8.
- Inspect EGR Boost Sensor Solenoid Stuck Open Or Close - Inspect EGR boost sensor solenoid. See EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION SYSTEM under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MAZDA6, MIATA, MPV, PROTEGE & PROTEGE5 article. If EGR boost sensor solenoid is operating properly, go to next step. If solenoid is not operating properly, replace EGR boost sensor solenoid. After repair, go to step 8.
- Inspect EGR Boost Sensor Stuck Open Or Close - Inspect EGR boost sensor. See EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION SYSTEM under EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MAZDA6, MIATA, MPV, PROTEGE & PROTEGE5 article. If sensor is okay, go to next step. If sensor is faulty, replace EGR boost sensor. After repair, go to next step.
- Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTC P0106 Completed - Reconnect all components. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, clear DTC. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine and perform MODE 1 - PCM ADAPTIVE MEMORY PRODUCE DRIVE MODE , MODE 2 - EGR MONITOR REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE MODE and MODE 3 - HO2S HEATER, HO2S & TWC REPAIR VERIFICATION DRIVE MODE under DRIVE MODES. Recheck DTCs. If DTC P0106 is present, replace PCM. After repair, go to next step. If DTC P0106 is not present, go to next step.
- Verify After Repair Procedure - Using scan tool, perform After Repair Procedure. See AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE . If no other DTCs are present, testing is complete. If any other DTC is present, go to applicable test and repair.
