Description & Operation: Introduction

The FN4A-EL is a 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transaxle that incorporates 4 multi-disc hydraulic clutches, one-way clutches (sprag type) and a friction lined brake band that prevents rotation of sun gear drum.

Six solenoids that control shift changes and shift feel are located on valve body. See Figure. Solenoids are controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

NOTE: Shift solenoid "E" may also known as lock-up solenoid, Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid or TCC lock-up solenoid.

PCM receives information from various input devices and uses this information to control shift solenoids for transaxle shifting and Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) control.

On models not equipped with sport shift, an Overdrive OFF (O/D OFF) switch is mounted on the gearshift lever. When O/D OFF switch is released to ON position, transaxle will shift into 4th gear when gearshift lever is in "D" position. O/D OFF light on combination meter should not be illuminated. When O/D OFF switch is depressed to OFF position, transaxle will not shift into 4th gear. O/D OFF light will be illuminated.

On models equipped with sport shift, vehicle is operated in "3", "2" or "1" range by moving gearshift lever to manual position. Transaxle can then be manually up or downshifted by pushing gearshift handle forward or pulling backward. With gearshift lever in "D" position, vehicle automatically upshifts and downshifts depending on speed and accelerator position.
