Description & Operation: Introduction

The SB4A-EL transmission consists of a lock-up torque converter, oil pump, valve body assembly, 3 clutch assemblies, 3 planetary gear sets, 4 clutch style brakes and 3 one-way clutches. Transmission is electronically controlled. Shift solenoids and Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid are located on valve body. See Figure . Solenoids are controlled by a Transmission Control Module (TCM). TCM receives information from various input devices and uses this information to control solenoids for transmission shifting and torque converter lock-up.
