EGR Valve (Miata, MPV, Protege, Protege5 & 626)

  1. Using a stethoscope, listen for EGR valve initialization noise (clicks) when starting and stopping engine. If clicking noise is heard, EGR valve is functioning properly. If clicking noise is not heard, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect EGR valve connector. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between EGR valve terminals "C" and "E", "C" and "A", "D" and "B" and between "D" and "F". See Fig 1 . Each resistance reading should be about 22 ohms (MPV & 626) or 20-24 ohms (Miata, Protege and Protege5).
  3. If resistance is as specified, check wiring harness between EGR valve and PCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If resistance is not as specified, replace EGR valve.
