Description & Operation
Module communications network provides ability for module-to-module communication by sharing inputs and outputs instead of each component having an input and output wired directly to each module. Escape has 2 module communications networks: Standard Corporate Protocol (SCP) BUS and International Standards Organization (ISO) 9141 network.
SCP BUS consists of a pair of twisted wires connected between Data Link Connector (DLC), Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and instrument cluster. Even if a wire is open or shorted, communication is still possible between modules and DLC.
ISO 9141 network consists of a single wire connected between DLC, Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) control module, Restraints Control Module (RCM), Generic Electronic Module (GEM). Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) is integrated into PCM. This system will not function if a wire is opened or shorted. ISO 9141 communication network does not permit inter-module communication. Modules cannot initiate communications, a diagnostic scan tool must ask for all information if a fault has occurred. This article is used to diagnose SCP BUS and ISO 9141 communications network circuit faults.
