Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Ensure FREEZE FRAME DATA has been recorded. Check for related service bulletins. Repair as necessary and go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor connector. Check connector for loose or damaged terminals, poor contact or corrosion. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step  6.
  3. Measure resistance between ECT sensor terminal "A" (Red/Blue wire) and "B" (Black/Red wire). If resistance is about 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not about 2 ohms, replace ECT sensor and go to step  6.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect appropriate PCM connector. Check connector for loose or damaged terminals, poor contact or corrosion. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step  6.
  5. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. With original ECT sensor still in engine, connect a NEW ECT sensor to harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check and record ECT PID data. Turn ignition off. Replace original ECT sensor with new one. Start engine and allow to idle for 5 minutes. Using scan tool, check ECT PID data. If difference between ECT PIN values with new ECT sensor not installed and new ECT sensor installed (after 5 minutes of operation) is more than 5.6°C, original ECT sensor was at fault, testing is complete. If difference is not more than 5.6°C, go to next step.
  6. Reconnect all connectors. Allow vehicle to stand (non operational) for 6 hours. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine and allow engine to idle for 5 minutes. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0116 is present, replace PCM and go to next step. On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If DTC P0116 is not present, go to next step.
  7. Cycle ignition from off to on. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, go to appropriate test.
