Diagnostic Procedure
- Record FREEZE FRAME PID data. Check for related service bulletins. Repair as necessary. Ensure all appropriate connections are clean and tight. Repair as necessary. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, access TR SW, D SW, S SW, L SW and R SW PIDs from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Monitor PID values while moving gearshift lever through specified ranges. See TRANSAXLE RANGE SENSOR PID VALUES table. If TR switch PID values are as specified, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. Repair as necessary, then go to next step. If D SW, S SW, L SW or R SW PID value always reads ON, leave scan tool connected and go to next step. If TR SW PID value always reads ON, go to step 5.TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH PID VALUES
PID & Gearshift Lever Position PID Value TR SW "N" ON "P" ON All Other Positions OFF R SW "R" ON All Other Positions OFF D SW "D" ON All Other Positions OFF S SW "2" ON All Other Positions OFF L SW "L" ON All Other Positions OFF - Ensure all appropriate connections between TR switch and instrument cluster are clean and tight. Repair as necessary. Disconnect 34-pin in-line harness connector X-06, located behind right side of dash, to left of glove compartment. See Fig 1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If gearshift lever indicator light goes off, go to next step. If gearshift lever indicator light does not go off, check and repair short to power in TR switch "D", R", "2" and "L" circuits between TR switch and PCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Ensure ignition switch is turned to ON position. Using scan tool, access TR SW, D SW, S SW, LSW and R SW PIDs from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Monitor PID values while disconnecting TR switch connector. If PID values do not change from ON to OFF when switch is disconnected, go to next step. If PID values change from ON to OFF when switch is disconnected, check TR switch internal circuits. See TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If switch is faulty, replace TR switch. If TR switch is okay, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. Repair as necessary, then go to next step.
- Ensure ignition switch is turned to ON position. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between chassis ground and TR switch harness connector terminals "B", "C", "D" and "G". See Figure. If voltage is zero volts, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. Repair as necessary, then go to next step. If voltage is more than zero volts, repair short to power in affected circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Using scan tool, continue monitoring TR SW PID while disconnecting TR switch connector. If TR SW PID value still reads ON after TR switch is disconnected, measure voltage between chassis ground and TR switch harness connector terminal "F". See Figure. If battery voltage is present, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. Repair as necessary, then go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in affected circuit. If TR SW PID value changes from ON to OFF when TR switch is disconnected, check TR switch internal circuits. See TRANSAXLE RANGE SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If TR switch is okay, check connectors, terminals and wiring harnesses for intermittent concern. Repair as necessary, then go to next step. Repair as necessary, then go to next step? If TR switch is faulty, replace TR switch.
- Start engine and allow it to idle. Using scan tool, access RPM, D SW, S SW, L SW, R SW and TR SW PIDs from PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD menu. Road test vehicle in each range ("P", "R", "N", "D", "2" and "L") with RPM PID value at 530 RPM or more for at least 2 minutes. Determine if DTC P0705 is still present. Retrieve DTCs. Retrieve DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If serviced DTC resets, replace PCM. If DTC does not reset, repair is complete.
