Pre-Disassembly Backlash Inspection

Install left and right axle shafts into differential. Support axle shafts on V-blocks. See Fig 1 . Measure backlash of both pinion gears. Backlash should be .001-.004" (.03-.10 mm). Maximum service limit is .004" (.10 mm). Rebuild or replace differential assembly if backlash is not as specified.
