General On-Vehicle Inspection

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda Millenia. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Obtain code number and deactivate audio anti-theft system before disconnecting battery (if equipped).
  1. Verify that the battery is fully charged. Charge if necessary. Verify that the drive belt tension is within the specification. See BELT DEFLECTION  under ADJUSTMENTS. Adjust if necessary.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and verify that the generator warning light illuminates. See Fig 1 . If not, inspect the generator warning light and wiring harness between battery and generator warning light and generator.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to START and verify that the generator warning light goes out after engine starts. If the light stays on, turn off all electrical loads.
  4. Measure the voltage at terminal "L" using a voltmeter. See Fig 2 . With ignition ON and engine OFF, voltage should be approximately 1 volt. With engine ON and idling, voltage should be 13.0-14.0 volts. If not as specified, replace the generator. If normal, inspect short circuit in the wiring harness between terminal "L" and generator warning light.
