Fuel Odor In Engine Compartment

DETECTION CONDITION AND POSSIBLE CAUSE

17 FUEL ODOR IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT
DESCRIPTION 
  • Gasoline fuel smell or visible leaks
FUEL ODOR IN ENGINE COMPARTMENT INSPECTION

STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 PRELIMINARY CHECKS
  • Perform the following preliminary checks:
    • Fuel lines.
    • EVAP system (canister, canister vent solenoid, rollover/vent valve and related vacuum hoses).
    • Fuel system (fuel injectors, fuel rail, fuel tank).
  • Are all checks OK?
Yes Go to step 2.
No Service as required. Verify symptom no longer exists.
2 VERIFY THAT FUEL PUMP IS OFF WHEN ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING
NOTE: This condition would be associated with a fuel odor with the engine off.
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Wait 5 seconds (for fuel pump to shut off normally).
  • Verify fuel pump is off.
  • After verifying, turn key OFF.
  • Was fuel pump off? 
Yes Go to step 3.
No

See FUEL PUMP ALWAYS RUNS .

3 CHECK EVAP SYSTEM Yes Service as required.
No Go to step 4.
4 PERFORM PCM QUICK TEST
  • Are any DTCs displayed during Continuous Memory, Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO) or Key ON, Engine Running (KOER) Self Tests? 
Yes Check for cause.

See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE NUMBERS .

No Go to step 5.
5 CHECK FUEL SYSTEM
  • Check fuel system for possible sources of fuel odor.
  • Is a fault indicated? 
Yes Service as required.
No Go to step 6.

  • Verify test results. If OK,
