Power Steering Pump: Reassembly

  1. Place rotor on rotor shaft splines with large rotor counterbore facing upward. Install retaining ring in groove in end of rotor shaft. Place insert cam over rotor with recessed flat facing toward reservoir.
  2. With rotor extended halfway out of cam, insert spring into rotor spring pocket. Work spring into rotor cavity directly below recessed flat on cam. Use a slipper to compress spring. Install slipper with groove facing upward.
  3. Hold cam stationary. Turn rotor either direction, one space at a time. Install another spring and slipper until all 10 rotor cavities are filled. Ensure springs and slippers do not fall out when turning rotor.
  4. Using Seal Driver (T78P-3733-A3 ), install NEW rotor shaft seal. Using a plastic mallet, drive seal and then seal retainer into bore until bottomed. Place pump housing plate on a flat surface with pulley side down.
  5. Insert 2 dowel pins and disc spring (dished surface upward) into housing plate. Lubricate "O" ring seals with power steering fluid. Install seals on lower pressure plate. Insert pressure plate with seals toward front of pump into pump housing plate and over dowel pins.
  6. Place assembly into "C" clamp. Using Seal Driver (T78P-3733-A3 ) in rotor shaft hole, press lower plate lightly until bottomed in pump plate housing, seating "O" ring. Install cam, rotor, slippers and rotor shaft assembly into pump housing plate over dowel pins.
    NOTE: When installing assembly, use stepped holes for dowel pins. Place recessed notch in cam insert facing reservoir, opposite square pump mounting boss.
  7. Place upper pressure plate over dowel pins. Position side of plate with square recessed notch facing reservoir and opposite square pump mounting boss. Place NEW "O" ring seal on valve cover. Lubricate with power steering fluid.
    NOTE: Ensure plastic baffle is securely in place in valve cover. If not, apply petroleum jelly to baffle. Install baffle.
  8. Place valve cover over dowel pins. Ensure valve cover outlet fitting hole is in line with square mounting boss of pump housing plate.
  9. Place entire assembly in "C" clamp. Compress valve cover into pump housing plate until retaining ring groove is exposed in pump housing plate.
  10. Install valve cover retaining ring with ends near access hole in pump housing plate. Remove pump assembly from "C" clamp. Place NEW "O" ring seal on pump housing plate. Lubricate seal with power steering fluid. Install power steering reservoir.
  11. Install flow control spring and flow control valve in valve cover. Place NEW "O" ring seals on outlet fitting. Lubricate seals with power steering fluid.
  12. Install pump outlet fitting into valve cover. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table. Install mounting bracket on pump. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  table. Using Pulley Replacer (T65P-3A733-C ), install pulley on pump shaft.
