Fuel Gauge

NOTE: It may be necessary to remove fuel tank for access to fuel gauge sending unit connector.
NOTE: After changing checker resistance value, allow 1 minute for needle to stabilize. Allowable limit of needle deflection is twice width of needle.
  1. Ensure instrument cluster power and ground circuits are okay. Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel gauge sending unit 4-pin connector. Connect Red wire lead of Checker (49-0839-285) to Yellow/White wire terminal of fuel gauge sending unit connector (harness side). Connect checker Black wire lead to ground. Set checker to 22-ohms. Turn ignition on. Wait one minute. If fuel gauge indicates "E", go to step 5). If fuel gauge does not indicate "E", go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off, then on. Tap on instrument cluster. Wait one minute. If fuel gauge indicates "E", go to step 5). If fuel gauge does not indicate "E", go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connectors. Disconnect anti-slosh module connector from instrument cluster. Measure resistance between SIG terminal of fuel gauge (back of instrument cluster) and anti-slosh module connector terminal. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace printed circuit board. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. Ensure printed circuit board shows no signs of damage. Remove anti-slosh module from instrument cluster. Connect a jumper wire from Red wire lead of checker to SIG terminal of fuel gauge. Reconnect instrument cluster harness connectors. Turn ignition on. If fuel gauge indicates "E", replace anti-slosh module and retest. If fuel gauge does not indicate "E", replace fuel gauge, reinstall anti-slosh module and retest.
  5. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance of Yellow/White wire between instrument cluster and fuel gauge sending unit. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. If resistance is not as specified, repair Yellow/White wire between instrument cluster and fuel gauge sending unit. If resistance is as specified, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance of Black/Yellow wire between fuel gauge sending unit and ground. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms. If resistance is not as specified, repair Black/Yellow wire between fuel gauge sending unit and ground. If resistance is as specified, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel gauge sending unit 4-pin connector. Connect Red wire lead of Checker (49-0839-285) to Yellow/White wire terminal of fuel gauge sending unit connector. Connect checker Black wire lead to ground. Set checker to 145-ohms. Turn ignition on. Wait one minute. If fuel gauge indicates "F", check for distorted or damaged fuel tank, or faulty fuel gauge sending unit. If gauge does not indicate "F", go to next step.
  8. If fuel gauge indicates "F", replace anti-slosh module and retest. If fuel gauge does not indicate "F", replace fuel gauge and retest.
