Steering System - Electronic Power: Description
Mazda electronic power steering system is a hydraulically assisted rack and pinion-type. This steering system changes its steering assist power according to information received from vehicle speed sensor, turning angle sensor (steering wheel) and engine speed sensor. A control unit receives signals from these sensors and regulates hydraulic pressure. Hydraulic pressure is adjusted by a stepping motor or solenoid. See Fig 1 .
Control unit contains self-diagnostic capabilities for all electrical steering components. The control unit also includes a fail-safe function. If vehicle speed sensor signal is not received, the control unit will use engine speed sensor signal.
