Steering Columns: Installation

  1. Aligning marks made during removal, install column with intermediate shaft upper "U" joint over intermediate shaft. Install, but do not tighten, "U" joint clamp bolt.
  2. On 323, install and tighten hinge bracket nuts. On all models, install shim clips on column upper bracket flanges (if removed). Position upper end of steering column to instrument panel.
  3. Install upper bracket retaining nuts or bolts. Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock several times to align "U" joint splines. Tighten "U" joint clamp bolt.
  4. On all except 323, install and tighten lower column mounting bracket bolts. On 323, install instrument panel brace.
  5. On all models, install air duct, harness connectors and ignition switch. On 626, install angle sensor. Install combination switch, upper and lower column covers and steering wheel.
