Heat Protection - Front Axle Disconnect Actuator

If the front axle disconnect actuator reports an internal temperature below -40C (-40F) or above 125C (257F), the AWD will maintain the current front axle disconnect actuator until the concern is resolved. If the fault occurs while the front axle disconnect actuator is connected, normal AWD operation will exist. If fault occurs when the front axle disconnect actuator is disconnected, then only RWD operation will occur.

During excessive use or when towing a trailer, the AWD system may implement a heat protection mode to protect the front axle disconnect actuator from damage. Using a thermal model, the AWD module calculates the internal transfer case temperatures. If the calculated value is high enough to cause damage to either the clutch or the transfer case fluid, the AWD module will disconnect the transfer case clutch and /or disconnects the front axle disconnect actuator. Once the maximum temperature limit is reached, RWD mode is commanded and the AWD temporarily disabled or AWD OFF message is displayed in the IPC.
