Inspection and Verification

Diagnostics in this article assume a certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices. Refer to Service Information for information regarding Ford-specific diagnostic practices.

  1. 1.

    Verify the customer concern by operating the starting system.

  1. 2.

    Check the battery for loose, damaged or corroded connections.

  1. 3.

    Check the generator for loose, damaged or corroded connections.

  1. 4.

    Check the battery condition and state of charge. Refer to Battery, Mounting and Cables .

  1. 5.

    Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Accessory Drive . Verify the crankshaft and each of the components driven by the accessory drive belt rotate and are not seized or damaged.

  1. 6.

    If any aftermarket accessories have been added to the vehicle, make sure they are properly wired.

  1. 7.

    If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause before proceeding.
