Windshield Glass: Installation
- Trim the remaining urethane adhesive on the pinch weld to within specification. The surface should be smooth and free of cuts and contamination.
- Dry fit the windshield. Make alignment marks with tape or non-staining pencil to make sure of correct final placement and remove from the vehicle.
- Use the wool applicator to apply urethane adhesive metal primer Essex U-413 or equivalent, to any exposed metal on the pinch weld. Allow 6 to 10 minutes to dry.
- Apply urethane glass prep Essex U-401 or equivalent twice around the glass surface to be urethaned.
- Apply urethane glass primer Essex U-402 or equivalent to the same area prepared in the previous step. Allow 5 minutes to dry.
- Cut the urethane applicator tip to specification.
- Apply a bead of urethane adhesive Essex 400-HV or equivalent, to the pinch weld just outside the foam dam.
- Install the windshield glass by aligning it to the marks previously made.
- After the windshield glass has set, check for water leaks and add urethane adhesive as necessary.
- Install the cowl panel grille.
- Raise the headliner.
- Install the A-pillar trim panels.
- Install the interior rear view mirror.
CAUTION:
Open the vehicle windows to prevent the windshield from being pushed out by air pressure if a door is closed.
NOTE:
The moulding must be installed on the windshield glass before installation in the vehicle.
CAUTION:
Wipe off the glass prep immediately after each application.
NOTE:
If reinstalling the original windshield, remove excess urethane adhesive from the windshield glass.
NOTE:
If installing a new windshield, clean the inside of the glass surface with an alcohol-free cleaner to make sure the ceramic-coated area is clean.
CAUTION:
If using Essex 400 urethane adhesive and sealant, the curing time at temperatures above 13°C (55°F) and relative humidity above 50%, is 12-24 hours. Curing time decreases at higher temperatures and/or higher humidities.
CAUTION:
Do not drive the vehicle after installing the windshield glass until the urethane adhesive has cured. Inadequate curing of the adhesive adversely effects the adhesive bond.
