Removal and Installation

    All Vehicles 

  1. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
  2. NOTE: Apply tape to clockspring to prevent movement.
  3. Remove the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to STEERING WHEEL .
  4. NOTE: Lower the tilt release handle to access the second screw.

  5. Remove the 2 screws and the lower steering column shroud.
  6. From under the steering column, remove the screw and the upper steering column shroud.

  7. WARNING: To avoid the risk of serious personal injury, follow all warnings, cautions, notes and instructions in the clockspring removal and installation procedure.
  8. Remove the clockspring. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
  9. Remove the screws and the instrument panel steering column cover.

  10. Position aside the hood release handle.
  11. Remove the screws and the steering column cover reinforcement.

  12. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.

  13. Disconnect the electrical connector and detach the push pin from the column.

  14. Disconnect the PATS transceiver electrical connector.

  15. Vehicles With Column Shift 

  16. Detach the shift cable from the column and the bracket.

  17. Remove the bolt and disconnect the transmission range indicator cable.

  18. Remove the screw.

  19. Disconnect the overdrive cancel switch electrical connector.

  20. All Vehicles 

  21. Remove the screws and detach the conduit from the column.

  22. Remove the bolt and detach the intermediate shaft from the column.
    • Discard the bolt.

  23. Remove the nuts and the steering column.
    • Discard the nuts.

  24. CAUTION: Make sure that the column support is flush with the instrument panel before tightening the nuts.
  25. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
