Draining & Refilling

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis and 2003 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: To drain and refill vehicles, use Automatic Transmission Flush & Fill Machine (211-00018) on appropriate vehicles. Perform procedures in the instruction booklet to drain and refill transmission.
  1. Position the vehicle on a hoist. Place in Neutral.
  2. Loosen the transmission fluid pan bolts and allow the fluid to drain. After the fluid has drained remove the bolts. Remove the transmission fluid pan and transmission fluid pan gasket.
  3. Pull down evenly and remove the transmission fluid filter and seal. See Fig 1 . Clean and inspect the transmission fluid pan, transmission fluid pan gasket and the magnet.
  4. DO NOT remove the fluid filter. It is not necessary to change the fluid filter during a normal maintenance fluid change. Remove the torque converter drain plug cover. See Fig 2 .
  5. CAUTION: If installing a new filter, and the seal remains in the main control bore, carefully use a small screwdriver to remove the seal. Use care not to damage the main control bore.
NOTE: If transmission is being serviced for a contamination-related failure, use a new filter and seal. The filter may be reused if no excessive contamination is present.
  6. Install a NEW fluid filter and seal as required. Position the pan magnet into the transmission fluid pan.
  7. Install the torque converter drain plug cover. See Fig 2 .
  8. NOTE: The transmission fluid pan gasket is reusable, clean and inspect for damage, if not damaged, the gasket should be reused.
  9. Install the transmission fluid pan and gasket. Position the transmission fluid pan and gasket in place. Install the transmission fluid pan bolts.
  10. Lower the vehicle. Fill the transmission to the correct fluid level, using clean automatic transmission fluid. See RECOMMENDED FLUID  .
