Front Seat Backrest: Disassembly

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2005 Lincoln Town Car. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: Carry a live side air bag module with the air bag and tear seam pointed away from your body. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: Do not set a live side air bag module down on the cover tear seam. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING: After deployment, the air bag surface can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
WARNING: Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
WARNING: Before installing the side air bag module, check it for damage and foreign objects. If the air bag module is damaged, replace it. If any foreign objects are found, remove them. Failure to do so can result in personal injury in the event of an air bag deployment.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury, do not use any memory saver devices.
CAUTION: When removing the seat backrest trim panel, be careful not to damage the J-hooks. If the J-hooks are damaged, the seat backrest trim panel must be replaced.
NOTE: If a seat equipped with a seat mounted side air bag and/or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) system is being serviced, the supplemental restraint system (SRS) must be depowered. 
NOTE: The air bag warning lamp illuminates when the RCM fuse is removed and the ignition switch is ON. This is normal operation and does not indicate a supplemental restraint system (SRS) fault.
NOTE: The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
NOTE: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats with side air bags cannot be repaired. The front seat backrest trim covers are to be installed new. Cleaning is permissible.
NOTE: If a side air bag deployment took place, a new seat back pad, trim cover and side air bag module must be installed. Install a new seat back frame only if necessary.

    All vehicles 

  1. Position the seat to gain access to the fasteners.
  2. Depower the SRS. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING .
  3. Remove the affected seat. For additional information, refer to FRONT SEAT .
  4. Remove the front seat backrest. For additional information, refer to FRONT SEAT BACKREST .
  5. Disconnect the connectors at the rear of the front seat cushion.

    6. CAUTION: When removing the seat backrest trim panel, be careful not to damage the J-hooks. If the J-hooks are damaged, install a new seat backrest trim panel.
    NOTE: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats with side air bags cannot be repaired. New front seat backrest trim covers must be installed. Cleaning is permissible.

  6. Remove the seat backrest cover panel.
    1. Carefully fold the seat backrest cover panel to release the tension on the lower J-hooks.
    2. Slide the seat backrest cover panel down to release the upper J-hooks.
  7. Release the J-clips.

  8. Remove the bolts.

  9. Remove the pivot bolt.

  10. Pull the head restraint out to end of travel. Press the release button and pull the head restraint rod past its stop position.

    11. NOTE: The head restraint sleeve pins are not interchangeable, note location for installation.

  11. From inside front seat backrest, pinch the head restraint sleeve ends and pull out the head restraint sleeves.
  12. Unzip the side air bag deployment chute.

    13. NOTE: Install new side air bag nuts if installing a new side air bag module. If the existing side air bag module is being reinstalled, retain the existing nuts.

  13. Remove the side air bag nuts. For additional information, Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM for correct care and handling.
  14. Separate the side air bag module from the seat back frame.

  15. Disconnect the side air bag module electrical connector.

  16. Remove the side air bag module.
  17. Remove the cover.

  18. Remove the hog rings.

  19. Remove the cushion.

    20. Vehicles with power lumbar 

  20. Remove and discard the rivets. Remove the lumbar motor.

  21. Release the lumbar assembly from the bottom of the seat backrest frame.
  22. Remove the lumbar assembly.

    23. Vehicles without power lumbar 

  23. Remove the flexolator.
