Front Seat Backrest: Assembly

WARNING: Check the air bag deployment chute and zipper for damage. The deployment chute and zipper must not be repaired if there is any damage to the deployment chute or zipper. The seat back trim cover and deployment chute must be installed new as a unit. Failure to do so can result in personal injury.
WARNING: The deployment seam cannot be repaired or resewn. A trim cover requiring replacement of the bolster or side facing must be replaced as a unit.
WARNING: If the air bag deployment chute is not correctly positioned and completely zipped, the side air bag cannot function correctly. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.
CAUTION: When installing the seat backrest trim panel, be careful not to damage the J-hooks. If the J-hooks are damaged, the seat backrest trim panel must be replaced.
NOTE: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats with side air bags cannot be repaired. The front seat backrest trim covers are to be installed new. Cleaning is permissible.

    Vehicles without power lumbar 

  1. Install the flexolator.
  2. Vehicles with power lumbar 

  3. Install the lumbar assembly.

  4. Install the lumbar motor and new rivets.

  5. All vehicles 

  6. Connect the side air bag module electrical connector.

  7. Make sure the electrical connector is securely fastened to the side air bag module.
  8. WARNING: Inspect the mounting surfaces of the side air bag module and the seat back frame mounting bracket for any foreign objects before installing the side air bag module. If any foreign objects are found, remove them. Failure to do so can result in personal injury in the event of an air bag deployment.
    WARNING: Inspect the side air bag deployment chute and the side bag cavity in the seat back pad for any foreign objects. If any foreign objects are found, remove them. Failure to do so can result in personal injury in the event of an air bag deployment.
    WARNING: If the air bag cover has separated or the air bag material has been exposed, install a new side air bag module. Do not attempt to repair the air bag module. Failure to do so can result in personal injury in the event of an air bag deployment.

  9. Position the side air bag module onto the front seat back frame mounting bracket.
  10. NOTE: Install new side air bag nuts if a new side air bag module is being installed. If the original side air bag module is being reinstalled, retain the existing nuts.

  11. Install the side air bag nuts. For additional information, Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM for correct care and handling.
  12. Position the cushion.
  13. Install the hog rings.

  14. NOTE: Be sure the air bag chute is fed through the slit in the pad.

  15. After installing the hog rings across the top bolster, work the cover down to the chute. Install the cushion pad and cover.
    • The air bag deployment chute must encircle the side air bag module, going completely around the side air bag module and the side of the seat back frame.
    • Align the air bag deployment chute to the side air bag module, making sure it covers the length of the side air bag module, but does not cover the top or the bottom of the side air bag module.
  16. Install the side air bag chute.
  17. WARNING: The deployment seam cannot be repaired or resewn. A trim cover requiring installation of a new bolster or side facing must be installed as a unit. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.
    WARNING: Check the side air bag deployment chute and zipper for damage. The air bag deployment chute and zipper must not be repaired. If there is any damage to the deployment chute or zipper, a new seat back trim cover and deployment chute must be installed as a unit.
    WARNING: If the air bag deployment chute is not correctly positioned and completely zipped, the side air bag cannot deploy correctly.

  18. Position the air bag deployment chute.
    1. Insert the outboard side of the air bag deployment chute between the seat back pad and the side air bag module, pulling it around the outboard side of the seat back frame.
    2. Insert the inboard side of the air bag deployment chute between the seat back pad and the side air bag module from the inboard side of the seat back frame.
  19. NOTE: Be sure the side air bag deployment chute is correctly positioned, before proceeding to the next step.

  20. Zip the air bag deployment chute completely closed, then position the zipper tail at the top of the air bag deployment chute, into the seat back opening.
    • The air bag deployment chute must encircle the side air bag module, going completely around the side air bag module and the side of the seat back frame.
    • Align the air bag deployment chute to the side air bag module, making sure it covers the length of the side air bag module, but does not cover the top or the bottom of the side air bag module.
  21. NOTE: The head restraint sleeve pins are not interchangeable. Make sure the sleeve pins are in their correct location.

  22. Install the head restraint sleeves.
  23. Push the head restraint sleeve tab and install the head restraint.

  24. Install the pivot bolt.

  25. Install the bolts.

  26. Install the J-clips.

  27. CAUTION: When installing the seat backrest trim panel, be careful not to damage the J-hooks. If the J-hooks are damaged, install a new seat backrest trim panel.
    NOTE: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats with side air bags cannot be repaired. New front seat backrest trim covers must be installed. Cleaning is permissible.

  28. Install the seat backrest trim panel.
    1. Slide the seat backrest cover panel up into upper J-hooks.
    2. Carefully fold the seat backrest cover panel to install the lower J-hooks on retainers.
  29. Connect the electrical connectors.

  30. Install the front seat backrest. For additional information, refer to FRONT SEAT BACKREST .
  31. Install the affected seat. For additional information, refer to FRONT SEAT .
  32. Repower the SRS. For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING .
