Engine and Radiator Flushing: Material

WARNING: Do not open the cooling system while it is hot or the engine is running. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, see COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING .
  2. Remove the water thermostat. For additional information, see THERMOSTAT .
  3. Install the water hose connection without the water thermostat.
  4. NOTE: Refer to the cooling system flusher manufacturer's operating instructions for specific vehicle hook-up.
  5. Using the an appropriate cooling system flusher, flush the engine and radiator.

    Use Ford Premium Cooling System Flush VC-1 or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M14P7-A. Always flush the cooling system with water thoroughly after using the VC-1 flush and prior to filling the cooling system. Always fill the cooling system with the same coolant that was present in the system. Do not mix coolant types.

  6. Install the water thermostat. For additional information, see THERMOSTAT .
  7. Backflush the heater core. For additional information, see HEATER CORE BACKFLUSHING .
  8. Fill the cooling system. For additional information, see COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING .
