Front Seat Backrest

WARNING: The safety belt pretensioner is a pyrotechnic device. Never probe a pretensioner electrical connector. Doing so could result in pretensioner or air bag deployment and could result in personal injury.
NOTE: Driver seat is shown, passenger seat is similar.
    WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood latches.
    The side impact sensors (if equipped) are located at or near the base of the B-pillars and C-pillars.
    To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to BATTERY & CHARGING SYSTEM .
  2. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, notes, and instructions in the supplemental restraint system (SRS) deactivation/reactivation procedure.
  3. Deactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEACTIVATION AND REACTIVATION .
  4. Remove the front seat. For additional information, refer to DRIVER SEAT .
  5. Remove the front seat backrest. For additional information, refer to FRONT SEAT CUSHION .
  6. Disassemble the components in the order indicated in the following illustration. To remove individual components, carry out only the following steps:

  7. NOTE: Make sure the battery negative cable is still disconnected before continuing with the installation portion of this procedure.

  8. To assemble, reverse the disassembly procedure.
  9. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY & CHARGING SYSTEM .
  10. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the front seat restraint system electrical connector.

  11. Connect the front seat restraint system electrical connector.

  12. With the restraint system diagnostic tools installed at the remaining deployable devices, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
  13. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to BATTERY & CHARGING SYSTEM .
  14. WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, notes, and instructions in the supplemental restraint system (SRS) deactivation/reactivation procedure.
  15. Reactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEACTIVATION AND REACTIVATION .
  16. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY & CHARGING SYSTEM .
  17. WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service only. Remove from the vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
  18. With all the restraint system diagnostic tools removed, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer toAIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .

    Item 2: Backrest Trim Panel Disassembly Note 

  1. Remove the seat backrest trim panel.
    1. Pull out at bottom to release the retainer clips.
    2. Pull out at sides to release the retainer clips.
    3. Slide the trim panel down and remove.

Item 3: Head Restraint Sleeves Disassembly Note 

    NOTE: The inboard and outboard head restraint sleeves are not interchangeable.
    NOTE: The head restraint sleeves incorporate an alignment tab that must face forward when installed.

  1. Squeeze together the tip of the head restraint sleeve and pull the sleeve out of the frame tube.

Item 4: Backrest Trim Cover Disassembly Note 

  1. Remove the ten hog rings (one shown).

Item 8: Power Lumbar Assembly Disassembly Note 

  1. Drill out the four rivets (two shown).
