Test F: Warning Indicator Flickers Or Operates Intermittently
- Inspect all generator, power distribution and battery connections for looseness, corrosion, and loose or bent terminals. If all connections are okay, go to next step. If a problem exists, repair as necessary.
- Start engine and let idle. Inspect battery junction box fuse No. 11 (20-amp) for looseness. Inspect central junction box fuse No. 30 (30-amp) for looseness. Wiggle fuse connections and note warning indicator. If warning indicator does not flicker, go to next step. If warning indicator flickers, repair loose fuse connections as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Using a fused (15-amp) jumper wire connected to positive battery terminal, backprobe generator harness connector terminal "A" (Orange/Light Blue wire). See Figure. Start engine and let idle. Observe warning indicator. On Lightning models, if warning indicator flickers, replace generator. See GENERATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. On all other models, if warning indicator flickers, go to next step. On all models, if warning indicator does not flicker, repair loose connection(s) between generator and battery. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Turn ignition off. Check generator 1-pin harness connector for damage, corrosion and looseness (White/Black wire). If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Remove generator from vehicle. Measure resistance between voltage regulator "F" terminal screw on back of generator and generator 3-pin connector terminal "A" (component side). See Figure and Figure
. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace generator. See GENERATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Remove voltage regulator and brush holder. Measure resistance between generator housing and each generator slip ring. See Fig 1. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or more between both slip rings and housing, replace voltage regulator. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms between either slip ring and housing, replace generator. See GENERATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
