Test C: No Communication With Instrument Cluster Module

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Lincoln LS. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Ignition switch must be cycled from LOCK to RUN position to enable Switched System Power (SSP) feature. Always enable SSP feature before proceeding with test procedures.
NOTE: Instrument Cluster Module (ICM) is integral of instrument cluster.
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 20-pin harness connector C220b. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b terminal No. 3 (Orange/Blue wire). See Fig 1 . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair power distribution circuit as necessary. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  2. Disconnect instrument cluster 22-pin harness connector C220a. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220a terminal No. 11 (Green/Black wire). Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b terminals No. 6 (Green/Red wire) and No. 17 (Yellow/Green wire). If battery voltage exists at all terminals, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist at any terminal, repair power distribution circuit as necessary. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220a terminal No. 6 (Black wire). Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b terminal No. 13 (Brown/Red wire). If both resistances are less than 5 ohms, repair module communications concern. See MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - LS article. If either resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in appropriate wire(s) between ground and instrument cluster. See GROUND DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
